Apples, Apples, Apples!

Did you know there are thousands of apple varieties? We have tried hundreds of them here at Gopher Glen and kept 65 of the top ones for our customers to enjoy. We also grow many other old-fashioned varieties such as Rhode Island Greening, Skinner, Missouri Pippins, three Limbertwigs and other uncommon varieties not mentioned on our list. Experimental trees with eight or ten varieties each, as well as thousands of seedling trees grown from our own crosses, are beginning to produce totally new and never before seen apple varieties. It is all great fun! You never know — on one of your visits you may find yourself being a guinea pig for one of our brand new varieties.

Braeburn: First picking! We will have lots as we have just started picking. We get lots of calls waiting on this favorite. They are very nicely dense, sweet, and balanced with a touch of tart. GREAT keeper!

Granny Smith: The fruit is hard, firm and with a light green skin and crisp, juicy flesh. The flavour is tart and acidic. It remains firm when baked, making it a popular cooking apple. Developed in Australia!

Fuji: is an apple cultivar developed by growers at the Tōhoku Research Station of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry in Fujisaki (notice the Fuji name), Aomori, Japan, in 1939. It originated as a cross between two American apple varieties—the Red Delicious and Ralls Janet. Its flavor is sweet and its texture is crisp.

Pink Lady: developed in the 1970s by John Cripps in Western Australia, and is a cross between Golden Delicious and Lady Williams. A nicely balanced sweet and tart apple.
